The coordination of parade activities related to Veterans was organized and facilitated by Earl Billman, a member of the American Legion and the VFW Post 7706, and Paul Corwin, Past Post Commander for 1 July 2017 – 30 June 2019. Their guidance and professionalism was instrumental in the success of the parade. Paul worked closely Randy Karon, BHS Band Leader, to identify musicians to participate in the Barrington Community Band. 2019 Memorial Day Parade
VFW Post 7706 Veterans march in Barrington’s Memorial Day Parade Members of the VFW Post 7706 led by the new Post Commander, Guy Newell, presided over ceremonies at four local cemeteries – White Cementery, St. Paul Cementery, Barrington Center, and Union Cementary.. During the ceremony a statement honoring veterans was given, the VFW Color Guard carried the US Flag and VFW flag and the rifle detail fired a volley honoring veterans past and present. History of Poppy Day
About Poppy Day The VFW conducted its first poppy distribution before Memorial Day in 1922, becoming the first veterans’ organization to organize a nationwide distribution. The poppy soon was adopted as the official memorial flower of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. During the 1923 encampment the VFW decided that VFW “Buddy”® Poppies would be assembled by disabled and needy veterans who would be paid for their work to provide them with financial assistance.
